Friday Night Event- Just Fair Laughs
We know many people may wish to stay over in Leeds the evening before the conference, so we’ve arranged incredibly cheap overnight accommodation (only £30! with breakfast included) at Bodington Hall. You can book your overnight accommodation as an option when you register for the event here.
For those that are staying over, and for anyone else who wants to join (even if you’re not coming to the conference the next day), we’ve put on a comedy night!

We’re delighted to announce the following speakers at Futures North:
Dame Pauline Green, President ICA
Dame Pauline Green has been part of the Co-operative Movement for the past 35 years from its youth movement to being its advocate on European affairs to the European Parliament as a co-operative member of Parliament. She was Chief Executive and General Secretary of Co-operatives UK, a position she held from 2000 to October 2009. She served as Co-President of Co-operatives Europe and ICA Vice-President for Europe up until her election as ICA President. Dame Pauline has played an active role in the international co-operative movement particularly in Co-operatives Europe and strongly supported the restructuring process of the ICA. Dame Pauline stepped down as ICA Vice-President and Co-President of Co-operatives Europe upon her election.

Peter Couchman, CEO Plunkett Foundation
Peter is Chief Executive of the Plunkett Foundation, which supports rural communities to take control of the issues that matter to them, such as saving their shop or supporting local food. As part of this role, he is the Director of Making Local Food Work, the BIG Lottery funded programme. He came to the post after spending his career so far in the Co-operative Movement, where he was best known for helping to make Oxford, Swindon & Gloucester Co-op an internationally recognised example for engaging members and marketing its co-operative identity. He also helped to create Local Harvest, Midcounties Co-op’s local food sourcing scheme. He serves the Social Enterprise Coalition Council, DEFRA’s Third Sector Advisory Board and the International Co-operative Alliance’s Communications Committee. He is a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

More importantly, Peter is an excellent and engaging speaker, able to cut right to the heart of the matter and provide real insight.
Linda McAvan MEP
Linda is the Labour Member of European Parliament for Yorkshire and the Humber. She born and brought up in Eccleshill, Bradford and now lives in Sheffield with her husband Paul. She is one of six MEPs representing the region, and since the 2009 European election the sole Labour representative.
Linda has a wealth of knowledge on climate change and Fair Trade. In 2008 she was a member of the EU temporary committee on climate change, a committee charged with co-ordinating the work of Parliament in delivering the EU’s climate change package. Additionally, Linda chairs the European Parliament Fair Trade Group.

Building affordable, low carbon Cohousing projects: the LILAC Project

This workshop will outline the Lilac project – a co-operative society in Leeds which is building a cohousing development in west Leeds, based around 20 homes and a common house. Campaigning for Change

Campaigning for Change – a workshop to demonstrate the history of member campaigning throughout the history of the co-operative movement, for issues including workers rights and women’s rights. The workshop involves a timeline activity which demonstrates that on many of these issues, the movement has been ahead of its time in leading such campaigns.

Carpark Cricket
Carpark Cricket was piloted in Huddersfield in 2009. The 16 week programme is run across the South Pennines, organised by volunteers. Carparks at The Co-operative stores are used by Carpark Cricket to enable young people to learn to play cricket. They are now looking for sponsorship and partners to help roll the scheme out across the region.
Setting an Educational Agenda for Cooperatives

Employee-owned and cooperative enterprises have been foundation stones on which the social enterprise movement has been built across Europe, Asia and South America, but their role is yet to be fully recognised in Anglo-America books and courses in the UK. Rory Ridley-Duff, course leader for both the Cooperative and Social Enterprise Summer School and MSc in Social Enterprise and Business Democracy at Sheffield Business School will discuss new educational opportunities, and his new book for Sage Publications. The workshop will stimulate a conversation on ways of integrating the study of employee-owned and cooperative enterprises into Higher Education courses.
